Recently, Oscar-nominated actor and filmmaker Kristen Stewart made headlines by purchasing the historic Highland Theatre in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, a nearly century-old movie palace that first opened in 1925 and closed permanently in 2024 after struggling to survive in the post-pandemic era. Stewart described the moment she found the dilapidated venue as electrifying—“like a gunshot went off,” she told Architectural Digest, adding that she “ran toward it with everything I had” because of her fascination with the stories held by aging theaters. Her vision for the space goes far beyond a standard renovation: she aims to restore its historic architectural charm while transforming it into a community-centered cultural hub where people can gather, create, and share film and ideas outside the constraints of corporate entertainment. Instead of catering only to elite cinephiles, Stewart wants the venue to feel welcoming and inclusive, a place that fosters collaboration, creativity, and genuine community engagement rooted in the cinematic heritage of Los Angeles. Who says the old cinema days are dead ?
