Scianna’s black-and-white photography is noted for dramatic plays of light and shadow, often using natural illumination to imbue scenes with emotion and depth. His compositions feel theatrical—subjects appear on a stage framed by narrative context. He saw himself less as crafting the photograph, and more as “opening a window” through which the world reveals itself.
