New York and other cities of the 60s-80s in photos by Evelyn Hofer

Evelyn Hofer (1922–2009) was a German-born, American photographer often called a “photographer’s photographer” because of her refined, quietly powerful work. Her photography is deeply respected, but for decades she was less famous than contemporaries like Diane Arbus or William Eggleston. In recent years, her reputation has grown significantly. Hofer’s work is deliberate, patient, and carefully composed—very different from the snapshot or spontaneous styles of some of her peers. She photographed everyday people, artists, and social types with dignity and empathy. Her sitters often appear formally posed yet deeply human.
