The portrait depicts the artist’s close friend Michael Patterson. In the mid-1980s, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Malcolm Forbes, Patterson, and Basquiat spent a lot of time together at the New York club Area.
The main difference from many works by the American artist is that Jean-Michel used a real person as the central figure of the painting.
