Born: July 10, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia.
Overcame segregation barriers to train in tennis, showing early promise.
1968: First Black man to win the U.S. Open.
1970: Won the Australian Open.
1975: Won Wimbledon, becoming the first (and still only) Black man to do so.
Advocated for civil rights and social justice, speaking out against apartheid in South Africa and working for racial equality in the U.S.
Retired from tennis in 1980 after health issues (heart surgeries).
1983: Contracted HIV from a blood transfusion during surgery; went public in 1992.
Founded the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS.
Died: February 6, 1993, in New York City, age 49.
