Arthur Ashe (1943-1993)

  • Born: July 10, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia.

  • Overcame segregation barriers to train in tennis, showing early promise.

  • 1968: First Black man to win the U.S. Open.

  • 1970: Won the Australian Open.

  • 1975: Won Wimbledon, becoming the first (and still only) Black man to do so.

  • Advocated for civil rights and social justice, speaking out against apartheid in South Africa and working for racial equality in the U.S.

  • Retired from tennis in 1980 after health issues (heart surgeries).

  • 1983: Contracted HIV from a blood transfusion during surgery; went public in 1992.

  • Founded the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS.

  • Died: February 6, 1993, in New York City, age 49.
